Skagway

Image
I thought I would do a short blog about Skagway. I spent the morning working since the ferry doesn't leave until 2 pm. so we cleaned (I mean I cleaned) and did laundry. I was going to wash the ambulance but skagway doesn't have a car wash that I could find.  You can tell that the cruise ships are the new gold mine for Skagway. It's alot like St Thomas; jewelry shops everywhere.  I forget how much I like traveling with a dog because the vendors know I'm not on the cruise ship. Sis hunting a moose now  A very cool little town lots of little shops and boardwalks.  Not sure if you can see all three cruise ships. Traveling in an ambulance is very different from a camper. I just find some big industrial looking trucks and park/camp next to them. Nobody says a word!

Inside Passage

We are on our way. They put the ambulance in the belly of the ship. I am a little disappointed Sis has to stay in the ambulance for the entire trip and will miss the trip. I am allowed to check on her one time in Haines. I am not allowed in the cargo area while underway. In line, waiting to board the ship! Down the ramp. Driving on the ship. Leaving the dock  Underway. Checking on Sis and the ambulance in Haines. Sis guarding the ambulance.  A short stop in Haines Alaska. Now off to Juneau.

Klondike Highway

Image
I didn't think the scenery could get any better or the roads any worse. But they did! After weaving back and forth between British Columbia and Yukon province we finally made a left turn and headed towards Skagway. The Klondike Highway runs on the north side of the Teslin lake nestled between mountains. To my right I have a chance of avalanche and to my left I have a frozen lake. At least I had good weather today and no snow storms. My left hand turn off of the Alaska Highway. Sis off bear hunting. Sis in the left seat. I know she's old enough to drive but I'm not quite sure she's ready. I had to put her back in the right seat. If she only had thumbs. More snow, but a beautiful day. US Customs  I warned the customs agent about Sis and when he opens the door Sis takes off heading towards Alaska. I guess she was tired of Canada. We didn't have any trouble - they didn't ask for my rabies shot or Sis's  COVID vaccine. He was a little worried about my eggs. He wa...

Alaska Highway bucket list!

Image
If anyone likes to drive and likes beautiful scenery then the Alaska Highway should be on your list. I've driven the north side of the Columbia River and Highway 1 from Oregon to LA. And the Alaska highway has both of them beat. British Columbia is absolutely amazing! The Northern Rockies are incredible. I'm not going to write a lot but post pictures and do my best to explain. The drive started out a bit boring, then I drove through another snow storm for 2 hours. Almost a whiteout a few times.  Hat's off to those Canadian truck drivers for dealing with this every day. The Alaska Highway turned into a Canadian dirt road! This is a metal grate bridge... I assume so they don't collect snow and ice. I've passed over a few of these. Crazy roads! I think this is a Caribou? That's a bear! Watch out Sissy. I saw three today. Huge mountain goat. Are those buffalo? Yes I think they are! I ended up seeing hundreds of them grazing on the side of the road. I think we shoul...

Alaska Highway

Image
Today, May 10, 2022, I started the drive on the Alaska Highway starting at mile marker ZERO at Dawson's creek. It is a very interesting road. I saw three wrecks today: two big trucks and one pickup. One of the trucks was jack-knifed, the other was just laid over on it's side. The pickup was rolled over.   This was the roll over semi truck.  This morning before I took off driving I dropped into Walmart (probably the last one I'll see for awhile) The main thing on my list was a can opener.  Yes, I bought a bunch of canned food and have no way of opening them! The other thing on my list was beer. Well they don't sell beer in Walmart in Canada, guess I should have done better homework. While walking around Walmart I noticed they have street signs and directions posted on the floor. I'm not real sure if they had rent a cop to give out tickets if I went the wrong way! I stayed in the proper traffic pattern. After driving an hour I pulled over to walk Sis (she doesn't ...

Dawson Creek Mile marker zero on the Alaska highway

On my drive today I got stuck in a snow storm for about 3 hours.  While driving the ambulance in 25 degree weather in the middle of Canada in the middle of a snow storm I have to start questioning my life decisions! The ambulance did really well in the snow My poor Ambulance Mile marker zero! Sis looking at snow! Remember she hasn't seen snow since probably 2008 after living in St. Thomas, USVI.  I have to watch my co pilot when she gets in and out of her seat sometimes her fat butt hits the sirens and lights button! Seems like the Co-pilot is always hitting the wrong switches. Hard to see but I drove through some logging country. There were huge areas where they were harvesting the trees. Everything is still going good hope to be out of the snow tomorrow. I have one or two more nights until Skagway. I'm not in any rush now because my barge ferry doesn't leave until May 13th. One more interesting thing I've noticed on my drive is the difference in the wheat crops from ...

Crossed the Canadian border

Image
Well we made it across the border with no problems. They did search the ambulance and all is OK. They didn't even check to see if Sis had her current rabies shots!  My phone isn't going to work for the next few days. I'll try to find Internet and keep posting. I booked my ferry ride from Skagway to Juneau for the 13th of May.
